Role & Responsibilities

Chauffeur

Every journey, composed. The professional behind the wheel of a family’s day. What the role involves, the standard it is held to, the package it commands, and the positions open now.

Understanding the role

Arrival, without incident.

A Chauffeur is entrusted with the safe movement of a principal and their family – meetings, school runs, airports and everything between. Much of a principal’s day passes in the back of the car, and so does much of what is said there. These are the responsibilities that fill the day, and the depth each one brings to a private household.

  1. Safe, assured driving

Driving with skill and complete calm, whatever the conditions, the traffic or the timetable.

  2. Planning and punctuality

Planning routes, timings and contingencies so that every arrival is on time.

  3. The fleet

Keeping every vehicle immaculate and ready, and managing servicing, insurance and records.

  4. Family and children

Carrying children and family members with the same care given to the principal.

  5. Airports and aviation

Meeting private and commercial flights, coordinating with handling agents and security, and managing arrivals smoothly.

  6. Confidence

Holding every conversation in confidence, and working within the family’s security protocols.

The Benchmark

The Benchmark for a Chauffeur

Every Chauffeur we represent is measured against The Benchmark – our standard for character, capability and discretion. Three years is simply the minimum to join our network; most bring far more. Our professionals step into a role ready to excel, never to be trained. For this role, that means:

  • Advanced, defensive or security driving training; close protection training an advantage
  • Three years as a private or VIP chauffeur, with a clean licence held for at least five years
  • Calm, assured driving, and route knowledge that anticipates every delay
  • Confident with airports, private aviation and diplomatic protocol
  • References from private households of comparable standing, and a commitment to confidentiality
  • Basic DBS or a police clearance certificate from each country of residence

Licences, driving records, references and background checks are verified before any introduction is made. We do not forward CVs – we shortlist and select, so a client meets only the professionals we would place with confidence. See our full standards.

Chauffeur FAQs

The questions we are asked most

What is the difference between a chauffeur and a security driver?

A chauffeur’s focus is safe, seamless travel and care of the fleet. A security driver is also trained in evasive driving and works closely with close protection. Many of our chauffeurs hold both skill sets.

What does a chauffeur need?

A clean licence held for at least five years, at least three years as a private or VIP chauffeur, and advanced or defensive driving training.

Does a chauffeur live in or live out?

Most city roles are live-out. Country estates and travelling households often provide accommodation.

What hours does a chauffeur work?

Hours follow the principal’s diary, including early airport runs and late evenings. Hours, overtime and time off are agreed in the contract.

How is the salary agreed?

Every package is agreed privately between client and professional, with our consultants guiding both sides to a figure that reflects experience and the scope of the role. Salaries are quoted gross, and live-in or travelling roles typically include accommodation, meals and flights.

How long does it take to place a chauffeur?

Where the professional is free and available, the process from first interview to offer can be completed within seven days. We select from an established network rather than advertising, so the pace of every placement is set by the client’s needs – and we work to match it.
