Role & Responsibilities

Estate Manager

Stewardship on the grandest scale. The professional who runs an estate for the generations it serves. What the role involves, the standard it is held to, the package it commands, and the positions open now.

Understanding the role

Stewardship of a legacy.

An Estate Manager is entrusted with a private estate, palace or portfolio of residences – its people, property, land, budgets and long-term plans. The larger the portfolio, the more the role resembles running a private company. These are the responsibilities that fill the day, and the depth each one brings to a private household.

  1. Estate operations

Overseeing the daily running of every residence, building and amenity across the estate or portfolio.

  2. Leading large teams

Leading household, grounds, maintenance and security teams, with clear structures, rotas and standards.

  3. Budgets and reporting

Setting and managing estate budgets, accounts and contracts, and reporting to the principal or family office.

  4. Capital projects

Planning renovations, restoration and capital works, and protecting land, gardens, art and collections.

  5. Compliance and risk

Managing health and safety, insurance, legal and environmental obligations across every property and jurisdiction.

  6. Representing the family

Representing the family to advisers, suppliers and the local community with judgement and complete discretion.

The Benchmark

The Benchmark for an Estate Manager

Every Estate Manager we represent is measured against The Benchmark – our standard for character, capability and discretion. Three years is simply the minimum to join our network; most bring far more. Our professionals step into a role ready to excel, never to be trained. For this role, that means:

  • A background in estate, property or luxury hospitality management; a relevant qualification an advantage
  • Three years running an estate, palace or multi-residence portfolio of comparable standing
  • Commercial command of budgets, contracts and capital projects, reported with precision to the family office
  • Leadership of large teams across house, grounds and security, in more than one jurisdiction
  • References from comparable estates, and a commitment to confidentiality
  • Basic DBS or a police clearance certificate from each country of residence

Experience, references and background checks are verified before any introduction is made. We do not forward CVs – we shortlist and select, so a client meets only the professionals we would place with confidence. See our full standards.

Estate Manager FAQs

The questions we are asked most

What is the difference between an estate manager and a house manager?

A house manager runs a residence. An estate manager runs an estate, palace or portfolio – land, buildings, large teams, capital projects and compliance – much as the chief executive of a private company.

What experience does an estate manager need?

At least three years running an estate, palace or multi-residence portfolio of comparable standing, with strong financial and leadership experience. Most in our network bring considerably more.

Does an estate manager live on the estate?

Usually, yes – most roles include a house on the estate. Managers of international portfolios are often based at the principal residence and travel between properties.

Who does an estate manager report to?

The principal directly, or the family office. Reporting lines, budgets and authority are agreed at the outset, so the estate manager can act with confidence.

How is the salary agreed?

Every package is agreed privately between client and professional, with our consultants guiding both sides to a figure that reflects experience and the scope of the role. Salaries are quoted gross, and live-in or travelling roles typically include accommodation, meals and flights.

How long does it take to place an estate manager?

Where the professional is free and available, the process from first interview to offer can be completed within seven days. We select from an established network rather than advertising, so the pace of every placement is set by the client’s needs – and we work to match it.
